Flames' giving Subban an extended rest

By Payton Knoph

Calgary (AP) - The Calgary Flames have been battling inconsistency ever since they ended their 14-1-1 tear to start the season. A lot of that streak came on the back of star goaltender, Malcolm Subban. While Subban is having an above-average season, he is giving the Flames fits as he battles fatigue issues that is hampering his ability to put together two consecutive quality starts.

To help ease the burden on Subban, the team moved on with drastic measures to get him back into game shape. Late last week the Flames sent Darcy Kuemper to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a future 2nd round draft pick and veteran backup James Reimer. Kuemper was not a reliable option for the Flames as Marek Mazanec was stellar everytime he came up to take the odd start from Subban. With Reimer, the Flames just needed a body to be included in the deal and he was immediately sent to Quad City and Mazanec called up.

In order to scratch Subban and give him the rest that he requires, and to keep the team under the salary cap, the Flames signed Tyson Sexsmith to a 1 year $500k deal.

"Malcolm will get multiple games off to rest. We will be leaning on him in the weeks to come to give us a good run. It will be important that he be 100%." said GM Nagle. "We can't risk him getting injured." added the GM.
